(April 25, 2014) MINNEAPOLIS—Landscape design and build firm, biota, won 2014 Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association (MNLA) awards for three projects. The Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association annually honors companies and individuals for environmental activity, innovation in green industry business, service to the association, excellence in landscapes and operational excellence. The landscape design company was also a recipient of 2009 and 2008 MNLA Awards.
The first winning project is a multi-level outdoor space that features a wood- and gas-fire pizza oven and gas grill along with an abundance of storage and prep space. The expansive setting features distinct areas for dining, cooking and entertaining. “Our mission is to create outdoor spaces that inspire engagement. This client has a real passion for traditional Neapolitan-style pizza and entertaining outdoors,” said Jim Saybolt, biota Principal. “They’re thrilled with the outcome.”
The second winning project features a curved terrace and pergola that wrap around the unique curved architecture of the home’s exterior. “It’s important that a home’s landscape act as an extension of the architecture of the home,” explained biota Principal Steve Modrow. “The curved lines do this as well as the stone of the seat wall, which blends seamlessly with the home’s stonework.”
The final winning project borrows lines from Japanese gardens and architecture. “One of the most interesting aspects of this project is the custom fence,” said Modrow. “The transparency between the slats of the fence manages airflow, which creates a subtle microclimate that allows the Japanese maple to thrive in an urban setting.”
The three winning projects have also been featured, along with other landscape design work by biota, in Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and Artful Living.
